COMMUNITY FEATURE: Did you know that SF NOMA is offering The Project Pipeline Architecture Summer Camp is camp for youth age 11–14 students to learn STEAM skills (Science Technology Engineering Architecture and Math)? The camp is designed to expose youth to the built environment and architecture profession and is one of the few initiatives in the nation connecting youth and architecture.
“Programs like Project Pipeline is the reason why I am practicing architecture today. If it wasn’t for the encouragement from my mentors that I’ve had since I discovered NOMA, I would have a harder time getting through architecture school and navigating my way through the profession” says Jamilla Afandi who will be volunteering her time with Daniel Arzaga this year.

How it Works
The San Francisco Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects Project Pipeline workshop is an excellent opportunity for middle school-aged students to learn STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Architecture and Math) skills.
We are very excited to be holding a 4 day camp this year, August 8th – 11th in-person. This workshop is part of a national initiative by over twenty NOMA chapters across the country called Project Pipeline. The mission is to help diversify the architecture and planning professions by focusing on providing youth from underrepresented cultures interested in architecture and community planning into the career “pipeline” at the early stages of development.
Now entering our twelfth year working in the San Francisco Bay Area, we introduce middle school students ages 11-14 to the environmental design professions and strengthen STEAM skills with a fun and creative design thinking curriculum while building confidence in the design process, public speaking, and presentation skills.

Youth are introduced to the essential elements of architecture and work both individually and collaboratively to address community-focused issues through creativity and design innovation with a real project site. The camp was created to Equip, Empower and Educate Youth through architectural design and engineering techniques. Students will about sketching, diagraming, technical drawing, and model making.
