Vivalon and Eden Housing have opened a new senior housing and community center at 999 3rd Street in San Rafael, Marin County. The project includes 66 units of affordable housing above a medical clinic.
The six-story structure will create 67 apartments across 74,820 square feet, including 66 affordable homes and one market-rate unit for the on-site property manager. Apartment rents will range from $770 to $1,650 per month for residents aged 62 to older. Ten of the units will be reserved for unhoused individuals.

The Vivalon aging campus will provide medical services for the whole community with coordinated care, social engagement, nutrition services, and a new cafe with Community Action Marin. The facility will schedule activities and other events to promote good health.
Van Meter Williams Pollack is the project architect. The contemporary design features an articulated facade with protruding metal awnings, bay windows, and a setback along Brooks Street for the residential entrance.
Vivalon, formerly known as Whistlestop, is a San Rafael-based non-profit that provides community and medical services for older adults, particularly residents with disabilities. Eden Housing is a non-profit housing developer active across the region. Construction started in mid-2022, lasting just about a year and a half.

The project planning process goes back to 2013. BioMarin helped Vivalon acquire the 0.3-acre parcel at a discount as part of the pharmaceutical company’s proposed two life science offices. Construction has yet to start on the two structures.
